About David R Munson
If something is boring after two minutes, try it for four. If still boring, then eight. Then sixteen. Then thirty-two. Eventually one discovers that it is not boring at all but very interesting.
John Cage
Here and everywhere else, my stated personal motto is this: Everything is Interesting. Fascination with the world around me is what keeps me going, and it’s what makes me persist in wanting to make new things to share with the world.
It’s also why I’m organizing all my publishing efforts into one place, in the hopes that I can get this thing to build enough momentum to be self-sustaining someday.
Aleatorist is a word I made up, but it’s derived from the word aleatoric, meaning depending on or being determined by chance. It was originally an attempt to describe myself in the context of the nature of my interests, which are all over the place. Any time I learn about something new that catches my interest, I am helpless against the dive into the resulting rabbit hole.
Initially, much of what I publish here will represent finally finishing various personal loose-end projects, some of which have been sitting unfinished for more than a decade. Once those are out of the way, new work will follow. Zines, books, photo books, philosophical tracts, chapbooks, etc. There will be my work, but also the work of others, collaborative works, and works derived from community engagements.
Really, there’s no telling which direction things will go, and that’s part of what makes this fun. While there will be things related to Japan, wandering, photography, and other interests of mine, fundamentally this is not a venture with a specific focus beyond allowing everything to be guided by curiosity.
I’m excited to see where this all leads.
